Tech Editing for Knitting Designers Who Want Clear, Error-Free Patterns

I help knitting designers turn their drafts into clear, consistent, and error-free patterns—so you can release with confidence and spend less time worrying about mistakes slipping through.

If you’re looking for a second set of eyes before publishing, I’d love to help.

A little about how I work with designers

Tech editing, for me, is about supporting your design—not taking it over.

Every designer works a little differently, so I focus on keeping your voice intact while making sure the pattern is easy to follow, accurate, and consistent from start to finish.

Most of the time, I’m helping with:

  • Stitch counts and grading checks
  • Making sure instructions match across sizes
  • Cleaning up formatting so everything reads clearly
  • Checking charts against written instructions
  • Flagging anything that might confuse a knitter in the real world

Basically: I try to catch the things that are easy to miss when you’ve been staring at a pattern for too long.

What it’s like to work with me

I like keeping things simple and straightforward.

  1. You send your pattern – A draft is perfect—PDF, Word, or Google Docs all work.
  2. I take a look and come back to you – I’ll confirm scope, timing, and pricing within {timeframe}, so you know exactly where things stand.
  3. I do a full tech edit pass – Careful, line-by-line review focusing on clarity, consistency, and accuracy.
  4. You get clear, usable feedback – No overwhelm—just organised notes you can work through at your own pace.
  5. I stick around for questions – If something doesn’t make sense in my notes, you can ask. No guessing needed.

Why designers tend to come back

The goal is always the same: make your life easier, not more complicated.

Designers I work with often tell me they appreciate:

  • Feedback that’s clear and actionable
  • A process that doesn’t slow them down
  • Having someone who “gets” knitting patterns without needing things over-explained
  • Feeling confident hitting publish

Experience

I’ve been tech editing knitting patterns since 2018, working across:

  • Socks (a personal favourite)
  • Shawls
  • Garments
  • Accessories

If you’d like examples of my work, you’ll find a Pinterest Board dedicated to them.

A quick note on pricing

Every pattern is a little different, so I price based on scope (length, sizing, and complexity).

Tech editing starts at $40 CAD.

Once I’ve seen your pattern, I’ll give you a clear quote so you can decide if it feels right—no pressure either way.

Typical Tech Editing Time Estimates
(Every pattern is different, but here’s a general guide to help you plan):

  • Simple accessories: ~1 hour
  • Multi-sized or more complex accessories: 2–3 hours
  • Garments: 1–5 hours, depending on complexity

Ready when you are

If you’re looking for a tech editor who is thorough, easy to work with, and cares about the clarity of your final pattern, send me your draft.
