Knitting Technique: Duplicate Stitch

If you’re a knitting enthusiast looking to add a personalised touch to your projects or fix a minor mistake without unravelling your hard work, mastering the art of duplicate stitch is a game-changer. Also known as Swiss darning, duplicate stitch allows you to embellish your knitted items with additional designs or cover up errors seamlessly. In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll guide you through the process of executing a flawless duplicate stitch.

Materials You’ll Need:

    • Finished knitted item
    • Contrasting yarn
    • Tapestry needle
    • Scissors
    • Erasable fabric pen

Step 1: Choose Your Yarn

Select a yarn that contrasts with your knitted fabric. This will make your duplicate stitches stand out, creating a visually appealing design. Ensure the yarn is of a similar weight to the one used in your project.

Step 2: Thread the Tapestry Needle

Thread a tapestry needle with the contrasting yarn. Make sure the yarn tail is long enough for the stitches you plan to make and to weave in the ends later.

Step 3: Identify Stitches

Examine your knitted fabric and decide where you want to add duplicate stitches. Typically, this technique is used on stockinette stitch, but it can apply to other stitch patterns as well.

Step 4: Start from the Back

Insert the tapestry needle from the back of the work to the front through the centre of the stitch you want to duplicate. This is usually the bottom of a V-shaped stitch in stockinette.

Step 5: Follow the Path

Follow the path of the existing stitch with your needle. Work over the existing yarn, ensuring you don’t split the fibres, but go through the existing loops. This helps mimic the original stitch.

Step 6: Complete the Stitch

Once you’ve followed the path of the stitch, pull the yarn through, leaving a small loop on the front. This loop mimics the top of the stitch, completing the duplicate. Move on to the next stitch in your pattern.

Step 7: Repeat

Continue the process, duplicating each stitch according to your design. Pay attention to spacing and tension to maintain a consistent look.

Step 8: Secure Ends

When you’ve finished your duplicate stitches, turn your work to the wrong side and weave in the ends. This ensures your duplicate stitches are secure and won’t unravel.

Step 9: Admire Your Work

Step back and admire your beautifully enhanced knitted item. Whether you’ve added a personal touch or covered up a small mistake, duplicate stitch empowers you to take your knitting to the next level.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully completed a duplicate stitch. Experiment with unique designs and motifs to unleash your creativity on future knitting projects.
